A Roadmap of Hate

What was done to Jews, and on what charge, from an Egyptian priest's expulsion story to this week.

This timeline follows James Carroll's argument in Constantine's Sword (2001): the Christ-killer charge, made law from Constantine onward, is the mechanism, and the persecution that came later continues it. That is one reading. Saul Friedländer and Ian Kershaw treat Nazi racial antisemitism as something new. Richard Steigmann-Gall's The Holy Reich (2003) complicates both views. Entries that draw the line say whose reading it is.

photograph included. Grade A: a document or record from the time survives. B: a named historian's account, or a named institutional report. C: later tradition or disputed attribution. X: contested or unverified.

How to use this page

Tap an entry to open its card: the photograph, the evidence, the source, the dispute and any check still open. Use the buttons to show one kind of harm across all of history, every expulsion or every pogrom. Search covers places, names and sources.

Attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah are entered here: the Hamas charter of 1988 names Jews as the enemy, and Hezbollah's Open Letter of 1985 calls for Israel to be obliterated and quotes the Qur'an on the Jews as 'most hostile to the faithful'. Hamas's 2017 document, which says its fight is with Zionists and not with Jews, has its own entry.

Evidence here means documents, records and witness testimony. A religious text is entered as a text that exists; what it narrates is graded X unless an outside witness confirms it.

Counts from the ADL, CST and the Kantor Center are marked provisional until the academic literature catches up.
